The Marvellous World of Manufacturing

Not many people give much thought to the fact that almost every object you touch as you go about your day had to be manufactured by someone. When you stop to consider the impact that the processing and manufacturing industry has had on the modern world, it can blow your mind. My mind was blown when my son arrived home from his new job at a local processing and manufacturing plant and told me about the industry he was now working in. Since then, I have learnt all kinds of cool things which I would love to be able to share with the rest of the world.

How to store waste oil for your recycling service

by Anthony Harvey

Waste oil - and in particular, the contaminants within it - can be highly polluting to the environment and the water supply. This is why waste oil collection services do such a vital job. Here are some tips on how to store your waste oil before the collection service arrives.

Never mix oils

Firstly, never mix different types of oil. Different oils are processed in different ways, and mixing them together can make them difficult or even impossible to recycle safely. Instead, make sure that each type of waste oil is stored separately and is clearly labelled with the type of oil and its source.

Don't use the sewers

Secondly, never pour waste oil into the stormwater or sewerage system, or onto land. It can be highly polluting to soils and water and must be disposed of carefully. It may be acceptable to put small amounts of cooking oil in the general rubbish, but you should check with your local authority first. Otherwise, waste oil must be securely stored to await collection by your recycling service.

Use a secure container

Oils should be stored in secure containers. These containers should have a lid and should not be rusted or damaged. Drums are a traditional form of container for waste oil, but you should make sure that there is no possibility that they can be knocked over and cause a spill. You can also buy specialist waste oil containers that are designed to avoid spilling and cross-contamination.

Get the right licences

If you are storing large quantities of oil, particularly if it is highly flammable fuel oil, you may need a licence. You should find out about the laws for your state and ensure you are complying with all relevant safety procedures. (Your waste oil collection service should be able to advise you on this.)

Get the paperwork

When your waste oil service removes the oil from your premises, they should give you a manifest listing the types and amount of oil that they have removed. You may need this to demonstrate that you have complied with the relevant legislation, and also for any internal waste accounting procedures.

A waste oil collection service can collect oil in accordance with all relevant legislation, and ensure that you are fulfilling your environmental obligations. Just get in touch to find out how you can dispose of your oil in a safe and non-polluting way.
