The Marvellous World of Manufacturing

Not many people give much thought to the fact that almost every object you touch as you go about your day had to be manufactured by someone. When you stop to consider the impact that the processing and manufacturing industry has had on the modern world, it can blow your mind. My mind was blown when my son arrived home from his new job at a local processing and manufacturing plant and told me about the industry he was now working in. Since then, I have learnt all kinds of cool things which I would love to be able to share with the rest of the world.

The Safe Operation of a Weighbridge: A Guide

by Anthony Harvey

If you are planning to install a weighbridge at your manufacturing facility, it is vital that you understand how to ensure that it is operated and maintained in a safe manner. Below is a guide to everything you need to know to stay safe when conducting weighbridge operations. Read on to discover everything you need to know.

The location of the weighbridge

When installing the weighbridge, the first thing you will need to consider is its location. It is important that the weighbridge is situated in a location which allows vehicles enough space so they can easily move on to and off the equipment without having to make any sudden turns or reverse manoeuvres. Allowing a vehicle to approach the weighbridge in a straight-line will reduce the number of blind spots experienced by the driver, which in turn will reduce the chance of an accident or collision.

The condition of the pit

Once your weighbridge is operational, you need to ensure that the pit below the equipment is kept in a good condition. The pit should have access points which allow contractors to enter the space so they can conduct checks. During these checks, contractors should ensure that dirt and debris have not accumulated beneath the weighbridge platform. If dirt and debris are allowed to accumulate, this could interfere with the accuracy of the weighbridge. To prevent water from accumulating in the pit, it is important that adequate drainage is in place and that drainage channels are kept clear of any debris which could impede the flow of wastewater.

The accuracy of the weighbridge

To ensure that you are receiving accurate readings from your weighbridge, you should take steps to ensure that the equipment is operating correctly. Before each shift, the contractor who is in charge of the equipment should conduct a visual inspection to ensure that it is in good condition and that the structure does not have any missing or loose components. The operator should check that the measurement indicator displays a zero reading before the vehicle enters the equipment and that this reading returns to zero once the vehicle has exited the weighbridge. If the contractor notices any discrepancies, they should cease operations until a trained contractor has calibrated the measuring device.

If you would like to find out more about installing and operating this type of equipment, you should contact a company which specialises in weighbridges.
