Not many people give much thought to the fact that almost every object you touch as you go about your day had to be manufactured by someone. When you stop to consider the impact that the processing and manufacturing industry has had on the modern world, it can blow your mind. My mind was blown when my son arrived home from his new job at a local processing and manufacturing plant and told me about the industry he was now working in. Since then, I have learnt all kinds of cool things which I would love to be able to share with the rest of the world.
What do you do when your ship needs some repair work? Your ship is a substantial financial investment that you will want to protect, and you must be certain that any work carried out on your ship is completed to a high standard. You also have to know that, whatever conditions it will face at sea, the ship will remain safe for those who will be onboard. Before deciding on the most appropriate company to conduct your ship repair work, it is important that you are able to satisfy yourself that they have fully trained and qualified staff. You will also want to check that their repair facilities are appropriately stocked with all the equipment needed to allow them to conduct all the repairs required.
What tools will they need?
Before allowing any company to begin ship repair work, you need to know that they are capable of carrying out all the steel fabrication and other work that will form part of the repair. Ask the company about the equipment they have available and find out if they have sufficient available capacity on their sub-arc welding machines, oxy-acetylene torches and plasma cutters to complete your job in a reasonable timeframe. Make sure that they understand every part of the repair and that they have thought through how they will complete each stage.
What skills do their welders have?
Steel fabrication lies at the heart of most ship repair work, so it is important that the company repairing your ship have the skills and experience to carry out welding work to the highest specifications. Look for welders with multi-positional and thickness qualifications and experience working with steel, aluminium, stainless steel and carbon using MIG, TIG, MMA and FCAW processes.
What type of work do they do?
Not all ship repair work is the same. Take some time to explain to the company exactly what needs to be done and make sure that they have the right experience to carry out all the work. Major welding work to fix damage caused by a collision is very different from minor pipe welding or structural metalwork replacement. Don't be afraid to ask the company questions and to find out what other ships they have worked on so you can decide if they are a good match for you. Only when you are fully satisfied with the answers you receive should you agree that they are the right company to repair your ship.Share
